Proxy servers in general

Post by perjonsson1960 »

Folks,

First of all a stupid question: Are backup proxies never used when physical machines are backed up? There is never any mention of proxies in the backup log, not even when Application Aware is enabled.

Furthermore, we have two machines that have both the "VMware" and "Agent" proxy types. One is the virtual VBR server itself, and the other one is a physical machine that has previously been a repository server, but the repository has now been evacuated, so the machine in only used as a proxy.

But when I want to create a new proxy, I can only choose one of the types, either "Agent-based" or "VMware". How is it possible that those two machines have both types? And is it possible to appoint a new machine as a proxy with both types somehow?

Kind regards,
PJ

In most Veeam Agent scenarios, the data mover (the process on a proxy) runs on the physical machine itself (hence the name agent since it is running in the machine). In this case, a proxy is not required. If you want to offload this processing / data mover, you can use storage snapshot integration for the agents: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... s_hiw.html

If you want to have a proxy to do 2 roles, you have to assign them one by one, eg first the VMware proxy role and then the agent based role.

I tried to assign the second role to a machine that was already a proxy, and I got a message saying that "Backup proxy already exists", but I now realize that I must have chosen the same role that it already had by mistake. When I now choose the "VMware" role for a machine that already has the "Agent" role, or vice versa, it works.

Thank you! :-)
