Pull Azure VM to local repo & Surebackup

Post by dhayes16 »

Hello. We have an on-premise VBR 13.x server backing up a local Hyper-V VM's to a linux hardened repo and then sent to veeam vault. Works perfectly. Also, we have a couple Azure VM's backing up to Veeam Vault (Primary backup) as well. Works perfectly. We have the following questions if this is possible.

#1) Is it possible to setup a backup copy job from the Veeam Vault backups/repo to an on-prem Linux Hardened Repo? I thought I saw a limitation where pulling from Veeam vault was not supported.
#2) If number 2 is not possible would it be wise to create a separate backup job from Azure to the Linux hardened Repo?
#3) The main thoughts here is that we really need to provide some sort of automated testing for the Azure VM's. I know we can likely spin up some azure computer to accomplish this, but we already do surebackup on the on-prem Hyper-V host so we were wondering if this would be possible.

As I type this perhaps the Hyper-V configuration version would be a problem (ie from Azure to server 2019 on-prem).

Thanks for any input. We are just trying to find some sort of solution to test these backups.

Thanks
Dave

Hello Dave!

1). VBAzure using Vault as a repo should be able to set that repository up as an external repository within Veeam Backup and Replication where it can then act as a source for backup copy.

However, Backup copy can not be used as a source for SureBackup operations. This is called out here: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/vbr/u ... html?ver=1

The best alternative that I can think of in the immediate would be to utilize the "Scan Backup" option. This won't fully boot the system up like a full SureBackup but it will allow you to perform scans against the system for malware detection and data validation. For more information on scanning backups, take a look at this: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/vbr/u ... tml?ver=13. I understand you're looking for a way to automate this validation process today, but short of powershell, I don't see a way to automate that validation like you'd have with local backups.

Thank you very much for the reply!. I will check into the Scan Backup option, but the customer is looking for "testing" documentation on these backups to Azure for their cyber insurance policy.

Thanks again!!
