Purging specific files and folders from previous backup sets

Post by BarCon »

Hi guys

We are currently running B&R Essentials 11 and have a few years of full VM backups.

We are selling part of our company and we have to provide the other company with the data that it now owns. Considering we have been backing up this data, that is mixed in with our data, is there a way to purge the relevant files and folders from previous backup sets of this data?

Thanks ....

Hi Barcon

Unfortunately you cannot split/remove data from a backup file.
You have to provide them the entire backup files. Or find a way to restore older restore points and take a backup from only the data they own now. This option will take a lot of time.

Hello Fabian

Apologies, I didnt realise that you had responded.

We also have some VMs that was specifically created and used by one of our software products. Are we able to remove those specific VMs from the older backups?

Thank you

Have you tried to edit the backup job and modify Target -> Advanced -> Maintenance - Remove deleted items data after... as needed?

Hi Barcon

With VMs it's easier.

With per-machine backup files, you can provide them backup files of chosen VM's. If you have per-job backup files, you can delete VMs from the backups you want to provide them: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=120
Please note: You should only delete them in a backup copy which you don't require for yourself.

You can also export a restore point of a single VMs as a standalone VBK:
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=120

Or in V12 you copy entire backup chains of single VMs to a new location:
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=120

Modify the backup job and deleting after X amount of days wont work, since the data is intertwined with other company data that isnt moving across..

Thanks for the insight with regards to the VMs!
