Question about Sharepoint Backup

Our sharepoint content DB is stored on a physical SQL server. As part of the application aware backup, is Veeam B&R 8 able to remotely back up the Sharepoint Database?

No, only virtual machines can be backed up, in your case it will only be SharePoint with no database.

However, if you have content database files backed up by some third-party application, you can still use Veeam Explorer for SharePoint to browse them and perform item-level restores.
