question about the snapshot and backup

Post by SmithJohn »

I would like to know when I backup a vm(vmware)through Veeam, would the vcenter take snap shot of it ?
Or is there any material explain the principle behind the backup( the interaction between veeam and vmware)

Hi Charles,

Yes, any VM image-level backup solution takes a VM snapshot prior backing it up. Please see all the info in our User Guide: http://www.veeam.com/vmware-esx-backup/resources.html

Thanks!

Thanks for your reply.
Then. I would like to know whether the snapshot would be released after the backup?

Of course. On completion of the backup the snapshot will be removed.

thanks for your help.
For replication, is the process similar ?
Could I know is all these information exist in the user guide? It's quite difficult to find.

Yes, for the source VM the replication process is quite similar, at the beginning of the job the snapshot of the VM is taken and it is deleted right after the job is finished.

For the target VM snapshots are playing the role of replica restore points. During incremental run of a replication job the regular snapshot of a replica is taken. All of the changes are being written to the so-called snapshot delta-file.

Additionally, these restore points are stored in VMware native format. Thus, you can select any restore point you want either in VB&R console or by utilizing native VMware tools. Futhermore, even in case of the Veeam Backup server becoming unavailable, you can fail over to any existing replica restore point outside Veeam Backup & Replication (via vSphere Client or using a PowerCLI script).

All of the information is available in the corresponding User Guide (p. 45).

Hope this helps.
Thanks.
