Question regarding implementation of GFS scheme

Post by serverbu »

Hello,

we have a question regarding the implementation of a GFS retention scheme.

The environment consists of two ESXi host (ESXi_A and ESXi_B) on two physical locations and a vcenter.
We have one Veeam Backup Master Server (VBM) on ESXi_A and two Veeam Backup Proxies (VBP_A nd VBP_B) which are the Veeam Backup Repositories (VBR_A and VBR_B) as well.
VBP_A/VBR_A is running as VM on ESXi_A and VBP_B/VBR_B is running as VM on ESXi_B.
We have 5 Application VMs running on each ESXi Host.

We plan to Backup the VMs of ESXi_A via VBP_A to VBR_A and the VMs running on ESXi_B via VBP_B to VBR_B with a daily backup cycle and 14 restore points.
For this part we use two Backup Jobs with according settings in the Storage part of the job for ESXi_A and ESXi_B VMs and with a Schedule of: "Daily at this time:" and "everyday".

For GFS we wanted to implement 3 weekly and 2 monthly restore points. The weekly backups for ESXi_A should be taken every sunday and the monthly backups every last sunday of month and should be stored via VBP_A to VBR_A.

Here is the actual question:
If we implement a Backup Copy Job pointing to the Backup Job we would create copys of the daily backups as well, which makes no sense since these copys would reside on the same repository as the originals.
How would we have to set up the Copy Job to just get our weekly and monthly backups?

Plan is to copy the daily, weekly and monthly backups to remote site, so if say site A fails we can use backups from copy job to site B to restart the site A VMs on site B with minimum loss of data and continue normal work while fixing failure of site A.

So in the end we want for every VM to have 14 daily backups each day having ONE backup on site A and B, 3 weekly Backups on site A and B and 2 monthly Backups on site A and B but now for site A we get 14 daily backups with TWO copys on repository A and ONE on site B and for site B 14 daily backups with TWO copys on repository B and ONE on site A

Thanks and regards

You can set the 'Copy every' interval for the backup copy job to 7 days (this will allow weekly incremental backups) and enable GFS retention for monthlies (they will be stored as full VBK each).

If i set up the Backup Copy Job on thuesday and set the "Copy every:" interval to 7 days and the GFS retention to "Weekly backup:" 3 "Sunday 22:00" when exactly will the backup copy job make the weekly copy? On Sunday or the next Thuesday?

Also have the "Restore points to keep:" value match the Sum of weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly backups?

GFS restore points are created during simple retention process. So weekly restore point will be created during the next synchronization, whenever it happens (considering new backup files are available at the time of synchronization interval start, it will happen on Tuesday). That's why you'd better start the backup copy job at the required time and not enable Weekly in GFS retention (unless you need weekly restore points as separate VBK files).

No, this is retention of regular backup copies. GFS restore points are counted separately according to the corresponding values below.
