Questions about compression and dedup

Post by ds2 »

Is it possible to use the compression optimal in the backup job and in the backup copy job high or extreme? Or causes this problems?

Which compression uses endpoint backup?

Which is the best dedup option for a local attached USB 3.0 Harddrive (onsite - i will use it only for small VMs an Endpoints)?

1. Yes, this is fully supported.
2. Endpoint backup uses Optimal as to not overload the endpoint.
3. Not sure I understand the question.

First of all -> thanks for quick replying.

The question concerns to best practice for dedup, when I use a USB 3.0 HDD as backup target (the Local target or LAN target option)?

Hi Rene,

Actually, there is no option to dedupe single machine using Endpoint. However, if you can achieve that by other means, please refer to this post:
The backup compression (same as default level of compression in VBR) is enabled by default even in BETA. Indeed, there is no deduplication since there is only one PC per one backup, but for now, it could be achieved by backing up to the windows server 2012 share with the enabled deduplication.
Thank you.

Hello,

for Endpoint Backup is this correct. But i also asking for three little VM's (each of them contains max. 500 GB data), what option for dedup is here the best, when backup target is a USB 3.0 HDD?

Is this also true when the source for the Backup Copy job (compression high or extreme) are the Backups (compression optimal) and not the VM's self?

It depends. Is your USB going to be mounted on a local host or remote? Please refer to this guide

I'd suggest you to add you USB drive as a repository with "rotated drives" option enabled. It's not mandatory, but it will serve you well if you ever forget to attach your drive or attach another one by a mistake.

Is this also true when the source for the Backup Copy job (compression high or extreme) are the Backups (compression optimal) and not the VM's self?
I need to think about it for a while, ok?

Thank you.

Yep, that holds for Backups being the source too.

Then I'd recommend you to choose "Local Target" option:
The Local target option is recommended for backup to SAN, DAS or local storage. <...> This option provides the fastest backup job performance but reduces the deduplication ratio
However, if you are OK with high CPU and RAM utilization then you might want to try "WAN target":
<...>This results in the maximum deduplication ratio and the smallest size of backup files<...>
Thank you.

Hello,

I have one more question about the backup copy job. Is the full back for gfs retention (weekly, monthly, ....) a active or a synthetic one?

Greetings

Synthetic in v8, and will be selectable in v9.
