Questions about Hardened Repository

Post by runste »

Hi.

We are looking into to implement Hardened Repository (Immutable), and have a few questions.

First off all I wonder if I want 30 days immutable. I read that it need syntetic og active full ("To use the immutability feature, select forward incremental backup chain with active full backup or synthetic full backup when configuring the jobs.").
So do I need to calculate storage for 4 full syntetic backups (aka 1 full pr week)?

Do anyone have information on best practice for maximum XFS volume size?

Hi Rune,

Yes, configuring fulls is a requirement for this repository with immutability enabled. This tool should be able to give you some guidance on this > http://rps.dewin.me/

Thanks!

No - synthetic fulls do not consume physical disk space on XFS volumes. Consider them free to add to your existing backup plan.

There's not enough information on extra large repositories yet to form best practices. So I would recommend a few hundred TBs for now, which is definitely safe.

Hi all,

We have a fairly new 12 (well now 12.1) hardened repo set up and now that we've written a few backups to it I'm noticing that the synthetic fulls appear to be taking up *new* space in the repo - unlike our previous repo where they did not take up new physical space. At this rate the repo will be full quite soon :-)

I will open a ticket shortly but wondering if there's anything obvious this linux noob should check.
