Quick encryption question

Post by kjstech »

We were asked by auditors if our Veeam backups are encrypted. I really didn't know. So I was poking around and found in the jobs advanced settings under Storage there is a checkbox for "Enable backup file encryption" along with a credentials drop down and an add button to create a new credential.

If I simply click this box, hit add and create a new long / strong password, will the job be encrypted on next run? Or will it continue as usual and then do a full backup on the weekend? What happens to the existing backup copy jobs?

Jobs are Incremental with create synthetic full backups on Saturday and keep 4 restore points on disk.

If you enable it you will get a notice saying that the next backup will be an active full to enable encryption from that point on (creating a new chain). The old files will still be unencrypted.

For your backup copy jobs: enable encryption as well there so you have an encrypted offsite backup.

[MERGED] Encryption Requirement

Post by ncolt »

Hi, we are thinking about enabling the encryption of our disk backups.

Will this involve doing a full backup subsequently and will this requirement possibly be removed in v9?

Many thanks

Hi Neil, yes, full backup will be performed during the next job run (and this behavior will not change in v9).
