Quick Migration keeping existing snapshots?

Post by lando_uk »

I have a esxi host that is used for application packaging, and a lot of the guests on it have snapshots that need to be kept.
This current server is old and it's being replaced with a new host inside a new vcenter, so using Quick Migration, is there a way of keeping the existing snapshots?

No, unfortunately this is not possible with Quick Migration.

You can turn off VM, copy all VM files including snapshots via File Copy job and register VM in a new VCenter.
It will take significant downtime, but will preserve all your snapshots.

Hmm having to re-register in the new vcenter is a pain. I might as well just vmotion everything to some shared storage, then attach it to the new host.

I've heard that VMware Converter can V2V with snapshots intact, is this true?
