Recovering Orphand Files - after Full VM restore
I have restored a number of servers for DR purposes.
All the smaller servers 300GB and below are fine. I did have a prompt up saying the server was not shutdown properly on power up
The 2 larger servers near 2.5TB - have restored, i did not see the server power up - however windows has been trying to recover Orphaned files (been going on for over a day now)
Also on some servers it has lost the Static IP settings (i selected connect to a private network at restore time)
Any thoughts? or shall i log this with support?
Backup was taken using Veeam 7 and restored using Veeam 8

Re: Recovering Orphand Files - after Full VM restore
Given that the backup was taken with v7, if the large servers were expanded to their current size at some point, without a CBT reset, then it might be you've encountered the CBT bug and have lost data.
If the servers that lost their static IP settings upon restore were using VMXnet3 NICs and are 2008R2, see http://www.veeam.com/kb1570. Some Linux distributions have similar issues, which can be fixed by editing certain files as described elsewhere on the forum.

Re: Recovering Orphand Files - after Full VM restore
Hi,
thanks for the reply - i am working with support but over email and it is little slow.
this is the first test on the live servers - the recovery oh orphan files took near 3 days - and 3 drives are not present and over 1TB of data is missing.
disk configuration on the vm's has not changed sine they were created -
any suggestions - this a very critical as these servers require 100% uptime and contain critical data.

Re: Recovering Orphand Files - after Full VM restore
Still waiting to hear back from support -
i started a new full backup of the large server - this completed ok
Restore, however is stuck @ 25% complete 360GB restore - and only the Duration timer is counting up..
if i do not hear back, may end up reverting to Symantec backups..
anyone got any thoughts?

What about Instant VM Recovery? If you do this for the new full backup file, do you see the same process that searches for orphaned files?

Well the full backup I just did has hung on restore.
So not even got around to powering back up
Still not heard back from support.
Its the weekend..and potentially we have no backups of this server..and they don't see to be working..
Anyone tell me how or what I should try..?
Support thought the initial backup file maybe corrupted... So I created a new one - and its not restoring...they have not asked for any logs to check over.

Where are you restoring to? What kind of proxy/transport mode is used? Did you happen to get support take a look at your log files?

Update, the log says pipe time out?
found this, but confused:

the other 30 odd VM's have restored ok, just having issues with the 2 larger ones:
Support requested for the logs - have sent these over..

Re: Recovering Orphand Files - after Full VM restore
Right..
the restore works when i use network mode..we upgraded to version 8, hoping to speed up the restores and 5 days later reverted back to network mode..
SAN mode is not working...it works for all the servers that are less then 500GB..
2 servers greater the 1.5TB it fails to restore..
Any thoughts?
