does the location of the VMs swap file have any affect on replication perforance? what recommendations can anyone make to improve overall replication performance and\or limit the amount of data being replicated?

Locating swap file on separate dedicated volume (like this is usually done on Linux systems) definitely decreases the amount of data that needs to be transferred during incremental sync cycles. On the other hand, having swap on system volume and without fixed size (default Windows settings) with time makes it heavily fragmented and span the whole disk. Thus even minor updates to swap file make a lot of VMDK blocks "dirty" and those blocks (1024K size) need to be transferred to a replica during the incremental sync.

gostev- thanks for your reply. from your response, i believe you are talking about the VMs OS swap file location and if I am reading your response correctly, your recommending that, in this case, the windows swap file be stored on a separate volume will decrease the amount of data needing to be replicated during an incremental sync. Is there any impact on where the actual VMs .vswp file is located, with the virtual machine or on a separate lun? is the .vswp part of what is replicated?

Hello, this file is not a part of virtual machine so it is not being replicated at all.
