Replication question.

I have Veeam B&R server setup at the primary site, that's setup to backup 1 VM. Can I copy the VBK files to an external hard drive and then copy that to the ESXi datastore and setup the replication? I am trying to accomplish is to get the initial backup to the DR site using external hard drive rather than using WAN connection.
