Repository Maximum Concurrent Tasks Sizing

Post by BCT-Tech »

What are best practices for setting the Repository Maximum Concurrent Tasks? How do you find the sweet spot for best throughput?

I have Googled a bit, and read through this: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... tml?ver=95 - but am still a bit confused.

It says: "The maximum number of concurrent tasks depends on the number of CPU cores available on the backup repository."

Does that mean how many Proxies / Proxy CPU Cores you have in your environment? Or how many CPU Cores are available on the Veeam Server? The Gateway Server? The Mount Server?

Proxy and repository servers are meant there. Thanks.

Still don't understand. What is a "repository server"?

Most of our Clients use a Synology NAS for a repository. Do you mean the number of CPU cores on the Synology?

A server with repository role assigned (server that host veeam datamover, in other words). In your case you should be concerned with number of CPU a gateway server has (I assume the device is configured as a CIFS share). Thanks.

So in one of our environments, we have:
Veeam Server VM 32 GB Ram, 4 vCPU cores (Proxy set for 2 concurrent tasks)
3 VMware ESXi Hosts, 50+/- VMs
3 Server 2016 VMs as dedicated Veeam Proxies 4 vCPU cores (One on each ESXi Host, Proxy set for 3 concurrent tasks)
Synology NAS, RAID 6, CIFS shares

The Veeam Server VM has the Datamover service. On the Repository, we have the Gateway Server set to Automatic, and the Veeam Server and Synology are in the same LAN.

So we should have the Maximum Concurrent Tasks set to 4?

You server hosts both proxy and gateway server roles, meaning tasks will be split between them. So, in your case it's 2 concurrent tasks at max (4 cores/2 = 2). Thanks.

Can I increase throughput of the backups by removing the Veeam Server as a Proxy? Or not including it as a possible Proxy in backup jobs?

We have 3 other dedicated Proxies.

Correct, in this case the backup server will only host gateway server role with 4 spare processing slots. Thanks.
