[FEATURE REQUEST] Resource Pool VM Ordering and more

Post by marksie1988 »

Hi All,

I would like to request the following features:

1. We have the requirement that specific virtual machines in a resource pool are backed up first, we need to use resource pools as virtual machines are added and people forget to add them to the backups. However we would like the ability to set a higher priority to some machines that we want backing up first. similar to when doing just a VM backup but within the resource pool.

2. More Granular backup windows, currently the system only allows for hourly scheduling which is not practical for some of our customers e.g. we have a requirement that all backups (including snapshot removal) finish before 9am this means with the current system we need to end the backup at 8am when ideally we would like to end the backup at 8:45am, having 15 minute increment option as well would be ideal

Hopefully this is something that you will add to the next update.

Regards,
Steve.

May I ask you to clarify your first request?
As I can understand, you have big resource pool with several most important VMs. You need to back them up first and then backup all other VMs.
Since new VMs are created, you need to add whole resource pool, not individual VMs.
Am I right? If so, you could perform following workaround:
Add all your important VMs to jobs as individual ones.
After that add resource pool.
That way your important VMs will be backed up first, and then job will work with all other VMs in resource pool.

yes that is correct. if we add the virtual machines to the list as well as the resource pool will it not try to backup the VM's twice?

No, each VM will be backed up once. Moreover, you can specify different settings for the individual VMs and the resource pool, settings for individual VMs will have higher priority than those of any container added to the job.

It's not exactly what you're looking for, but if you're using Veeam ONE, you can potentially use "max allowed job duration" alarm and set it for your entire backup widow (minus 15 minutes). This alarm will terminate the backup job and clean up the snapshot file (if required).

Unfortunately we wouldn't be able to do this as we need it to run all weekend and are using Backup & Replication not Veeam One.

You could potentially upgrade your Veeam B&R to Veeam Availability Suite, but thanks for the feedback.
