Restore a vib file after removed from VEEAM

Post by anivard »

Hello,
I have a daily backup job: start with 1 full and 2 Increment.
I need to restore data after 4 days. I recovered the VIB file from the Trash Bin.

I would like to use it to recreate the chain with a old VIB, a VBK and 2 new VIB.

How can I do?
Or can I open the VIB file?

Thank you,

Antoine N.

It is a bit hard to guess here, as I do not know what happend and which job chain setup you have (Incremental or Incremental with Syntetic fulls)?
How did you manage to restore a old VIB file as we do not place our backups in the trash bin?

In general a VIB is part of a chain and can reference to a VBK or a set of older VBK together with one or more VIBs.
If the chain is complete you can restore (our support can help to import).

Best option is to open a Veeam support ticket and let our support team look at this.

Hello Antoine and welcome to the community!
If you set retention = 3 restore points, i.e 1 Full(.vbk) + 2 increments(.vibs) so if you backup daily, there is no option to restore from the 4th day as there is no backup. Besides the oldest .vib is deleted, its meta info is erased in the backup meta file (.vbm)
If you have the vib file, try to move it to the repository with other files, rescan the repository and start restore wizard.
Contacting the support team is also a good idea.
Thanks!

I added the VIB file, it's not working.
I recopied the VBK, VIB file, and reimport, it's not working.
I removed the VDM, and reimport, it's not working.

I can restore VBM (from the trash bin) but the VBK changed.

I disabled the backup job to check any test!

How have the backups appeared in the trash bin, by the way? Did you delete them manually?

The files in the Trash bin were deleted by VEEAM.
The files appeared in the Trash bin from my QNAP NAS.

Once you do, please provide a support case number for us.

Based on the few infromations from the case, you use a Incremental chain (Forward Incremental Forever).
With this chain the oldest incremental get merged with the oldest restore point (full file). That way the Incremental from the Storage trash bin reference to a full file that do not exist anymore.
