No, we use component from outlook to create the PST.
Outlook do not need to be configured, just installed.
You can install the Veeam backup console on your PC that has Outlook in use and do the PST export there.

There are no plans for this at the moment.

Not planned.
Can you please specify why we should look into this?

Re: Restore Exchange Mailbox to PST without Outlook
I would save myself installing the Veeam backup console on a client or installing Outlook on a server.

Re: Restore Exchange Mailbox to PST without Outlook
The reason why we are doing it that way and as well copy the ese.dll from the Exchange backup to access the data at restore is to automatically stay compatible with any update that happens on the Microsoft side.
It is actually a big advantage, so no plans to change this.

Re: Restore Exchange Mailbox to PST without Outlook
Not that i have ever needed it. But if Veeam only needs ese.dll, would it be possible to just take this .DLL file from a client which has Outlook installed and put it somewhere on the Veeam server? In the end, if Outlook must be installed on the server, it should also have a license (and will cost something). Also, it's less hassle to just transfer one file compared to installing a full-blown Outlook.

Re: Restore Exchange Mailbox to PST without Outlook
The ese.dll is automatically copied/used from the Exchange server that you want to restore (mutliple Exchange versions that you backup will automatically use the correct ese.dll).
For Outlook. Potentially you can copy the needed files (we do not have a list). But as you have a component or Outlook copied/installed you will need same licensing. In the end it is likely that all you users have user licenses and you do not need an extra license. But this is to be discussed with your license consultant. Anyway you have to take then some manual steps for keeping the files up to date. I would install it and let the Microsoft update mechanics take care as usual. And please let me add there is no need to install Outlook on the Veeam Server. You can use a client OS to install our console and there install Outlook for the PST export. PST export is only one way of restoring mails. You can restore to original (or separat mailbox), you export as eml files or you can send mails as attachements. If you use a temporary mailbox, you can export it then with default tools as needed.
