restore from AWS if capacity tier is down?
Case #07585198
Is it possible to restore from AWS if our capacity tier is down?
Hi,
I suspect this may be a yes or no question. However, if it is possible to restore a backup from our AWS S3 bucket, is this a simple process? If it isn't simple, is there good documentation for me to acclimate myself to the task?

Hi Bob,
I'm not quite sure I understand the scenario you're trying to prepare for, but I can explain your options with recovery backups from Object Storage in the event that you had lost the Veeam Server.
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=120
Check this section of the User Guide -- you can import backups from a bucket used as a Veeam Object Storage repository on an existing or new Veeam installation. Veeam will scan the bucket when you add it, find the backups, and automatically import them into Veeam. From there, you can do restores directly as you would normally or proceed to download the backups to a local storage.
If you can explain the scenario you're trying to prepare for a bit more, we can better advise.

Re: restore from AWS if capacity tier is down?
Interesting. I will check it out.
I had been hoping that Veeam would download and recover straight from the AWS bucket in the event that the scale out capacity tier had a power or drive failure. I'm going to look into this more. I'll walk through the link you sent.
One goal is for us to create a new bucket and to backup directly to the bucket.
I entirely forgot the term 'bucket'.

Re: restore from AWS if capacity tier is down?
Do you mean when the performance Tier is down?
Performance Tier is usually the local storage and Capacity Tier is always object storage.
The user guide states that you can restore from the Capacity Tier Directly.

In the event, your VBR server goes offline and you need to restore but you cannot rebuild the SOBR you can use the link above from David to import the backups and perform the restore as well.

That's exactly what I meant. Sorry. My head is somewhat soupy.

Re: restore from AWS if capacity tier is down?
I'm asking again in order to be more clear. I hope.
Let's say we need to recover an old backup which is now stored on the AWS S3 bucket capacity tier. The performance tier is down and cannot be started. Is it possible to download or restore the backup directly from the S3 Bucket capacity tier to our onsite VMWare storage?
I am still going through online documentation. I've tried turning off the performance tier but haven't yet been able to figure out how to grab the backup from the capacity tier.
I'm thinking a new performance tier may be necessary.

Re: restore from AWS if capacity tier is down?
I saw the documentation which reminded me I've downloaded from AWS S3 once as a test. That is not difficult. For some reason, I was thrown off this time.
I suspect that the best action to take is to add a secondary performance tier to cover the primary one in the event that it goes down for any reason. The secondary performance tier will allow for training and practice without burdening the primary performance tier or accidentally filling up the storage space.
When unused, the secondary tier could be turned off to keep it from being compromised in case of a hacking incident. A recovered or rebuilt Veeam server could connect and download the backups locked down in the capacity tier to the secondary tier.
I need to learn more concerning unexpected incidents.
Thank you. I think I have a sense of where I was going. I also want to get started on the direct to bucket backups. We are looking at Veeam Vault too, I think.

Re: restore from AWS if capacity tier is down?
In my opinion the documentation of "take a capacity tier bucket and restore directly" is largely incorrect as I think the backup set has to be 12.2 and later native for that to work. For backup chains older than that I've written this post to work through the need: https://koolaid.info/maintaining-recove ... igrations/. In short, create a dummy SOBR with an empty perf tier and then mount the existing as capacity tier. A rescan will then give you restore points to work with.
