restore from capacity tier - how does dedup meanwhile work

Post by mcz »

Dear PM's,

when you're restoring a VM from the capacity tier, it might be that you're having a lot of identical blocks on your local extents and so you wouldn't have to download them from the object storage, which is sometimes faster (always in my case).

I remember that this behaviour got changed many times, depending on the origin where you have triggered the restore and based on the veeam version. However, meanwhile I have lost track about the current implementation and haven't found a proper answer using the AI assistant or using the manual way via helpcenter.

Could you please create an article that describes the situation based on version and how you'd have to restore to achieve the wannted result (I know some guys don't wannt dedup for validation purposes). Is it probably possible to check a box in the restore wizard to decide manually if I wannted to restore from A or B?

Thanks!

Hi Michael

Thanks for your feedback.
I can ask Tech writer to write something together. But it may time until they may add those changes to the user guide.
Do you have a already a specific question I can answer?

Best,

Thank Fabian,

in the meantime it would help to understand what I would have to do to use the already existent/downloaded blocks when restoring from object storage (GFS). Thanks!

Hi Michael

I apologize for not coming back earlier.
Please confirm the use case:
- Restore from Capacity Tier
- Data blocks which exist on performance tier should be taken from Performance tier
- Data blocks which only exist on capacity tier (possible with move policy) will be taken from capacity tier

Hi Michael

I have discussed your question internally. There is a general rule to our restore behavior.

Wherever you start the restore, we will take as many backup data we can from that location.
- Start the entire VM restore wizard from the Home menu and we will try to take as much data we can from your performance tier.
- Start your restore from Disk and we will try to take as much data we can from your performance tier.
- Start your restore from Capacity Tier and we will take all data from your capacity tier.

To answer your question, start the restore from the disk node or the big Restore icon in the Home menu:
