Restore VM including Inventory Tags?

Post by haslund »

I saw that with v8 U2 Storage Policies for a VM will also be backed up and restored, but does that also go for Inventory Tags?
I tried setting an Inventory Tag on a VM, back it up, delete it and then restore it... but seems the restored VM does not have any tags assigned?

Is this expected behavior?

Yes, this is expected. Currently tags are not backed up/restored, however we're considering adding this in future. Thanks.

The thinking here was that since there is a process already in place to tag all newly appearing VMs, the restored VMs will simply be tagged with that existing process (e.g. with Veeam Business View). For example, if your tags depend on host (location) of a VM, then restoring the VM tags may not always be desired. I can see though how this may be useful as an option for smaller environments without automation though. Thanks!

Yep, with Business View you can use either static rules (e.g. based on the location) or parse VM names to assign to the corresponding group via dynamic grouping exressions > http://helpcenter.veeam.com/one/80/vsph ... cheme.html
