Restore VM type backup
What is most advisable to restore a VM in the shortest possible time ?
That is, a file server machine where daily copies are made with Forward Incremental method .
Ls 10 restore points, I want to restore the last .
It takes the same as the method was Reverse Incremental (last

Re: Restore VM type backup
The fastest way to restore a VM to be usable is many times to do an Instant VM recovery. It will, depending on the performance of your backup storage, run slower but it will function.
You can then perform a storage VMotion to move it from the vPowerNFS datastore onto the production datastore.
Depending upon the circumstances leading to the need to restore you can do a restore of just the changed blocks from the last backup.

Re: Restore VM type backup
I understand that the average repository has to intervene. But it also depends on the type of backup (incremental , reverse , full) If they did not they would not be the disponilbles options.
It seems that the most effective is the reverse , the last copy is FULL .
I'm use Hyper-V

Re: Restore VM type backup
With just 10 restore points in the chain you will hardly notice the difference.

Re: Restore VM type backup
Impact can be observed in case of considerably long chains, due to the fact that metadata needs to be read from each increment. In case of reversed incremental though, there's an impact from full backup file fragmentation as well. So it depends.
