retention files

Hello,
My job is forever forward incremental and retention set to 3 days, after backup chain completed why i got 1 full backup and 3 incremental?
In my mind for 3 retention setting i should have 1 full and 2 incremental, if i have 3 incremental this mean we can restore to previous 4 day and retention is 4 not 3. Anyone can explain this?

Did the full and the three incremental get created on four different days?
