Retention

Post by loop »

I would be most grateful for any advice regarding backup retention.

We would like to have 30 days, and in some cases 180 days of backups for each VM – ideally we would like the data to be effectively overwritten after 30 days or 180 days respectively.

We have configured incremental backups with a full backup on the last Saturday of the month and 30 restore points – but we are not sure what will happen after 30 days?

Will the oldest full backup be replaced by a new full backup? If so will we be back to only one restore point and effectively one day of backup? (following merge of all restore points)

Or will we always have 30 restore points?

Or will the backup job stop and a new one need to be configured?

Many thanks,

Clint

Hello Clint,

The retention policy behaviour depends on whether you use reversed or forward incremental backup mode. But in any case you do not need to create new jobs in order use retention policy, incremental points in time will be automatically removed as soon as they meet your job retention policy settings.

Provided that you use default configuration (backup mode), then right after 30 days none of your restore points will be deleted. For detailed explanation please check out this topic: http://www.veeam.com/forums/viewtopic.p ... =retention

P.S. please also note that if you need any assistance in deciding what mode to choose, please look through our sticky F.A.Q. - Backup section:

Hope it helps!
