SAP on Oracle (Windows)

Since a while there is the Veeam Plug-in for SAP on Oracle integrating into BR*Tools. Unfortunately it's only available for Linux based installations.

According to https://www.veeam.com/wp-veeam-availabi ... guide.html backing up with pure RMAN, for which there is a plugin for Windows available, brings disadvantages. But the WP dates to 2019.

What would be the current best-practice for a Windows based SAP on Oracle environment?
Is there a recommended way to integrate the RMAN plugin into a SAP supported strategy on Windows?

for SAP on Oracle on Windows it's the same since 2019. There is no plugin for that setup.

Question: how long does the customer plan do use that setup? Are they just by chance already planning to migrate?

No plan so far. Everybody will have to migrate once in a while. But it seems to take some time for a lot of customers. At least from my perspective.

Has anyone used the pure RMAN plugin to accomplish a SAP on Oracle backup? What would be the caveats - besides no official support I guess.

Hello,

Technically, it can work, for example, with BR*Tools in rman_util mode, BRARCHIVE/BRBACKUP logs will be processed to a local disk in rman_disk mode. In this case, you will have your backup on two different media, one of which is the local disk of the database server itself. Obviously, it's not the best approach, especially if we're talking about DR scenarios. Also, you don't have the option to use util_file_online mode, which performs better in most cases as it fetches data files directly from the file system.

Can't we use Veeam Agent for Windows and configure Oracle options in Guest Processing?

I have a VM running in Azure, which has its own image level backup, and want to use veeam manage Oracle backups. Installing an agent should work, shouldn't it?

Technically, it can work but we did not validate this scenario explicitly in our labs, thus there is no official support for it.
