Setting up AWS gateway in Veeam

Post by Kiranpn »

Hi Veeam team,
We are unable to set up AWS gateway in Veeam.
We have found one article on google which is a little confusing:
https://jorgedelacruz.uk/2017/09/06/vee ... epositorio

On this article " How to create a Repository on Veeam Backup and Replication" section,
and on "New Backup Repository" window; it has "Repository Server":192.168.1.45 and on "path": /veeam-nfs-repo(192.168.0.254:/veeam-aws)
We are confused on this section:
1. Do we need to mount this nfs share path 192.168.254/veeam-aws on our main backup Repository ?
2. If we mount this path, is this the right command which is in AWS "file shares" windows
On Microsoft windows: mount -0 nolock 192.168.0.254:/veeam-aws [WindowsDriveLetter]:

Thank you for all your help :)

Regards,
Kiran

Hello,
that article is from 2017 and probably not needed anymore and also probably unsupported as it causes many issues... what are you trying to do?

If you try to copy your data to AWS, please use capacity tier as part of scale-out-repositories. I also recommend to check out the FAQ

If you try to back up directly to object storage because you might have 10G links or something like that directly to AWS: that kind of scenario is planned to be supported in V12 (next year, 2022).

Best regards,
Hannes

Hi Hannesk,
Thank you for the reply. Our security team is a bit reluctant to go through Veeam Capacity tiers, so we are trying through AWS gateway .
We have already created Linux AWS gateway and configured but not able to connect it through veeam so we can store our data into AWS storage.
We are struggling how to connect this Linux AWS gateway in our Windows backup server.
We have tried mounting process but it failed.
Is there any architecture to use this Aws Gateway?

Kiran

Hello,
that kind of gateway is not supported. It's known to have bad performance for various reasons.
Such gateway appliances are only supported in the following cases:

- All of the backup data is stored on the appliance altogether (that is, all of the backup chains are stored on the appliance as a whole and not scattered across multiple devices) and only additional copies of the backup data are transported to object storage.
- These appliances emulate a tape system (VTL) as an access protocol for Veeam Backup & Replication.
Maybe your security team can share why it is better to have NFS connections over the internet instead of HTTPS connections?

Best regards,
Hannes

Thank you, HannesK for the reply.
I am not sure why Security team is against the normal cloud backup system :)

Hello,
Jorge (the author of the blog post) will also add a disclaimer with the requirements for gateway appliances.

Without knowing the arguments, it's hard to react on it :-)

Best regards,
Hannes
