SMB3 or ISCSI?

Post by marc0castr0 »

Hey everyone. I have a QNAP which supports iSCSI and SMB3. It's currently configured wig SSD and 10gb nics. Wondering if anyone has seen any performance increase by switching to SMB3.

Here is a link to the unit.

Hello Marco.
In general SMB3 shows better performance, but I would test both in your infrastructure to see the difference.
Make sure your SMB SMB3 shares are properly configured.
Thanks!

I guess I am also confused with your question because enabling jumbo frames and protocol selection are not connected to one another? These are completely different levels of OSI stack: Layer 2 (Data Link) and Layer 5 (Session) respectively.

Marco,
do you mean all discs in your Qnap are SSD or just Cache acceleration with SSD?

You can do that, it won't hurt, however I think you should not enable it on links that are unstable since large packets are more likely to contain an error thus causing to retransmit the whole packet which in case of jumbo frames will take longer. Also another thing that should be taken into account - the buffer size on your QNAP. Please take a look at this thread for details.

Thank you.
