You hit a nail in the head with recovery aspect of this. This is one of the reasons why I've been pushing for the ultimate VM backup architecture. For example, deduplicating appliances make perfect secondary backup storage (for long term archiving purposes), but you do want faster primary backup storage for faster backups and recoveries.
