Space Used by backup and archive jobs

Post by Pepper »

Hi! My production Environment is: Single vmware Vsphere6 server with local storage, 8 powered on vms plus 2 (powered off) templates, totailing 786GB of eager zero vmdks.
Backup Job is set to compression level optimal, enable inline data deduplication, exclude swap files, exclude deleted files.
Backup Copy job is set to process the backup job virtual machines, compression level Auto, enable inline data deduplication, keep last 30 restore points and last 12 monthly backups.
Now the strange thing is that the full backup file of the backup job is 516G, however the monthly full archive backup ranges from 216GB to 335GB.

Which could be the reason of this difference in the full backup file size?

Many Thanks in advance.

Hello,

Maybe you have some "dirty" blocks in the full backup file of the backup job. What backup mode do you have selected for the job? Reversed, forward incremental?

Thank you!

Hi Pepper,

I`m also curious what is the size of full backup in the backup copy job chain.
Do you have hardware data deduplication on the secondary storage?
Thanks!

Reversed.

What do you mean for "size of full backup in backup copy job chain?
The storage for both backup and backup copy is a simple synology nas with 4 sata drives, so no dedup.

thanks!

Compact the full backup file or perform an active full to decrease its size.
