Split Veeam roles

Post by Il Ventu »

Hello,
we are planning to revamp our Veeam environment, at the moment we have a server (we can call it BIGSERVER) with all roles inside (VB&R, VBEM, mount, database etc) that manages all our backups.
We have also around 45 sites in EMEA and on each site we have a server with proxy/mout role and a dedicated NAS to store backups.
BIGSERVER has not enough resources to handle all the workload so we have decided to deploy 7 news servers to host different roles, this is the list:

SERVER0001 - Veeam SQL server
SERVER0002 - VB&R server
SERVER0003 - VBEM server
SERVER0004 - Proxy
SERVER0005 - NFS gateway
SERVER0006 - Wan accelerator
SERVER0007 - Mount FLR server

The problem now is how to approach the migration from BIGSERVER, regarding the database Veeam support suggests to detach and connect the db files to the new SQL installed on SERVER0001 and fix the connection but I have some doubts about VB&R and VBEM, for example the Veeam Backup Catalog... where have I to install it ?
On SERVER0002 or 0003 ?
Also, how can I migrate actual catalog folder ?
After database migration, have I to import Veeam configuration to the new environment too ?

Any suggestion is EXTREMELY appreciate.

Regards.

Hello Andrea,

The catalog folder is created for both Veeam Enterprise Manager and Veeam B&R, so you need to migrate both. After the SQL database migration for B&R and Enterprise Manager you need to copy the catalog content to the same folder on the new servers and you are good to go. Cheers!

Hello,
thank you for your answer, I have checked the BIGSERVER (where I have all the Veeam roles) and I found only one VBRCatalog folder with these other subfolders:

- Import
- Index
- Journal
- Publications
- Replication
- Seach
- Tapes
- WasteBin

I see only this folder ( 120gb), so I have to copy this foder both on SERVER0002 (VB&R) and SERVER0003 (VBEM) with the same path ?
The path can be changed ?

Regards.

Hello,

Yes, it would be better to copy the catalog folder to both servers. I believe that this article might be also helpful as it contains the instructions to migrate both Veeam B&R and Veeam Enterprise Manager. It makes sense to review this KB if you want to change VBR catalog path.

Thanks!

Yep, it was an invalid link, it should work now anyway (https://www.veeam.com/kb1889).

Thanks!
