SQL Server backup, Success, but not all instances saved

Post by Brunok »

Hello,
we use App-Aware-Backup for our SQL Servers. Everything works fine. I remarked that the job is successful, even if not every Database is saved. I found that when trying to restore a DB from the server. I can see one instance in the Restore-Task, but not the 2nd instance. I think this has to do with the SQL-permissions, (i'm using a backup-admin for the jobs). In fact, the Backup-Admin had no permissions for Logon to this Instance and it worked.
My question is - why does Veeam not even make a info that the backup was "successful" BUT not all instances from the DB were saved ? This can be veeery bad if you think you have a full backup from the server (which is correct), but a single DB restore will fail (with app-aware-backup / restore). I did not truncate the logs and did no tests at the moment. But maybe i will get a error during the Log-Backup-Job..

Thanks for clearing

Re: SQL Server backup, Success, but not all instances saved

Hello,
i just want to ask again. I have a SQL-DB Server. The account which i use, had no access on the first instance - no login configured for the backup account or admins (configured by the SQL-Admins). On the second instance i have access. Logon is set to mixed mode (SQL and Windows auth).

The backup job for this server is configured app-aware, everything works - after the backup i have "Success" as status.

But if i do a restore job for SQL i only have the possibility to restore the second instance. The job did not backup the first instance. Ok, adding the login credentials on the first instance solve this problem, but it is not good, that veeam does declare this backup-job as successful !

Is there a solution for this problem ??

Bruno, currently the solution is to give the account appropriate rights on the SQL Server. We are going to add a warning for this in foreseeable future. Thanks.

[MERGED] Sql restore wizard not showing all sql databases

Post by frankive »

Running Veeam 8 patch 1.

I have a sql-server with 3 sql-instances.
When I tried to test the sql wizard explorer it only showss two of the instances.
I think the only difference between the instances is that it is just using SA password instead of windows authentication.
Could this explain this behaviour?

Frank, you're correct. This is indeed related to permissions that account used to back the SQL Server up has on the specific instance.

Ok, thanks, will fix that.

Does this impact our restorescapability (database from guest files) or the quliaty of the backup, of those sql databases up to this date?

No, this does not affect backup consistency or ability to restore DB via FLR. The only thing it affects is granular restore via VESQL.
