SQL Server - Does a non-"COPY_ONLY" backup break restores?

Post by VanillaMastermind »

We will be doing a POC with Veeam B&R soon and I want to make sure I have everything lined up for when the time comes.

If I am doing the full backups and SQL Server transaction log backups in Veeam, and someone takes a manual native full SQL Server backup WITHOUT the "COPY_ONLY" switch, will that break my recover-ability? I don't think this would cause any issues since Veeam is not doing true SQL Server differential backups. From my understanding, the COPY_ONLY parameter only exists to not reset the differential base when doing native SQL Server backups.

It will definitely break your ability to take additional SQL log backups via Veeam (until the next Veeam incremental backup of the VM), and of course you can't restore from a backup that doesn't exist. I can't think of a reason why you wouldn't be able to restore from earlier SQL log backups, but I haven't tested it.

It won't have any impact on your ability to perform a restore of the entire VM.
