SQL2008 backup - Creating snapshot VSSFreezer
Hi
Trying to backup my SQL2008 VM but Veeam returns the following error:
Creating snapshot
VSSFreezer: Failed to freeze guest, wait timeout
Where should I start looking?
Veeam Backup & Replication 4.0 on W2003R2 Enterprise 32bit
SQL Server Windows 2008R2 Enterprise 64bit - SQL 2008 Enterprise v10.0.2531
Regards
Gabrie

Gabrie, do you have vCenter or Veeam Backup database on this server? If so, we have a number of existing threads describing what is causing this issue - try to look for your error with the forum search.

Re: SQL2008 backup - Creating snapshot VSSFreezer
Hi
I did read those other posts, but must have misread them I thought this only was the case when running vCenter PLUS sql on the VM, but the VM is only running the vCenter DB, not vCenter it self. And it is running the Veeam Monitor DB.
Btw, I had to check on the SQL Server to find out if it was or was not running the Veeam DB. How can I check in Veeam Backup & Repl which DB is being used?

You can see it from the following registry keys:
Code: Select all
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\VeeaM\Veeam Backup and FastSCP
SqlDatabaseName
SqlInstanceName
SqlServerName

Ok, for Veeam Backup & Repl the database is running locally.
Concering the backup of the SQL server. Is this indeed because the vCenter DB is running on it? A backup of the vCenter VM works without issues. I'd hate to nail the SQL VM down to one host and use the backup method where you point to a host instead of vCenter to perform the backup.

Alternatively, you could disable Veeam VSS for this VM.

I see in the last post you put here, disabling the Veeam VSS for the VM in question could fix this problem. What exactly does disabling the VSS do?

Anthony, this disables using our proprietary VSS integration that enables for transactionally consistent application aware backups with the help of Microsoft VSS technology. The stickied FAQ thread in this forum has more information about this.
