SQL2016 installation issue on Server 2022

Post by b.vanhaastrecht »

Hello,

I've just encountered a installation issue of VBR, during installation the SQL 2016 instance could not be started. I needed to deselect this option Beta: Use Unicode UTF-8 for worldwide language support in All Control Panel Items > Region > Administrative > Change system locale....

https://stackoverflow.com/questions/676 ... grade-step

After a reboot the SQL 2016 service did start and I could finish the installation of VBR.

I did not find any information in Veeams resources regarding this, I'm I really the first one to stumble on this? Is this known to Veeam?

Regards,
Bastiaan

Hello Bastiaan.

SQL 2016 is not supported on Win 2022: https://docs.microsoft.com/de-de/troubl ... in-windows
Therefore when installing Veeam you have to select a preinstalled SQL instance. Could e.g. also be an express edition 2019+. But you would have to install it beforehand.

Hello,
I'm I really the first one to stumble on this
usually support can answer that question - that's where most customers go first :-)

I remember that it just worked for me some time ago. But yes, what mdiver said... it's better to use a newer SQL version.

Best regards,
Hannes

See some additional Veeam-specific information in my comment here.

Prior to installation I checked the System Requirements, and there is no mentioning of it there.

https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=110

The installer also installs SQL 2016 with no incompatibility warning.

To my opinion Veeam should at least mention it in the System Requirements.

Again, as I've said in my post linked above, there's nothing to mention or warn about because there are no known incompatibilities and such deployments are fully supported from Veeam perspective. We've seen zero issue in our own Server 2022 testing and have literally thousands of customers who already deployed new Veeam 11a installs on Server 2022 without any issues. You're the first to face some problem, so it definitely looks to be due to some environment-specific deviation.

We had the exact same problem installing SQL Express 2016 SP2 with Veeam (or seperately). Setup always ended with errors. I needed several hours for troubleshooting and finding this solution - as described above: Unchecking "Beta: Use Unicode UTF-8 for worldwide language support".

System is a Dell R740XD2 backup server with Windows Server 2022 (fully patched), English language, USA regional settings.
