SRIOV Backup

Post by osman.basar »

Hi,
We have a virtualization infrastructure consisting of virtual servers with SRIOV network cards. As you know, it is not possible to take a snapshot while these servers are power on. With the Veeam application, backups can only be taken from servers when they are power off or with the agent. What do you think about the development of this feature? I think this can be added to new versions of the Veeam backup software.

Hello Osman

Welcome to the forum.

Unlikely.
Veeam Backup & Replication, like all other backup products, relies on vSphere snapshot technology to create backups of virtual machines. When you enable SR-IOV for a VM, snapshots for that VM are no longer possible.
This is a limitation from vSphere, not by backup vendors. Without VM snapshots, we cannot take VM image-level backups of a running VM.

Availability of Features
The following features are not available for virtual machines configured with SR-IOV:

- ...
- Virtual machine snapshots
- ...

Maybe use a Veeam Agent for backup as the VMware API does not allow us to backup with their APIs.
