Sybase ASE backup

Post by firestream »

Dear all,

we are trying to switch from Commvault to Veeam for SAP Sybase ASE backup.
The backup running perfectly but the transaction log truncate function is missing from the feature. Trying to search around the forum can't find anything useful.

Just wondering did anyone use that method? how do you overcome the transaction log truncate?

Running Sybase ASE 16 on VMware 6.7 with Pure Storage (with Veeam Plug-in enabled).

Hello,

There is no possibility to set up a transaction log backup job for SAP Sybase in Veeam in a similar way as it's possible for SQL and Oracle.

I believe you should take care of transaction logs at the level of Sybase database itself.
Maybe you could find more information on Sybase Infocenter, for example this section provides the examples of different log truncation commands.

One more suggestion would be to run pre-freeze and post-thaw scripts to quiesce application data and bring the VM to a consistent state during backup.

Thanks!

We are using Pure Storage with the plug in. Do we still need the vmware pre and post scripts since the snapshot is handled by the storage which should be in the consistent state?

I hope Veeam provide more kbase or helps on this topic. There are a lot of SAP users is using ASE databases.

Storage snapshot per se doesn't ensure applications consistency inside the OS. This is done either by Veeam B&R AAIP or via pre and post scripts triggered during VMware quiescence.
