Synthetic full backup chain definition

Hi,

Im hoping someone could help me understand the definition for a backup chain when synthetic full backup is configured.

What is consider in terms of a synthetic full backup the backup chain without the use of an active full backup.
Lets say you have a retention policy of 14. Synthetic is configured for each 4 day.
Is the backup chain the full 14 points with senthetic fulls or just the synthetic full with the previous incrementals?
What happens whih the chain after the 14th retention point?
