Tips for full and incremental backups

Post by irishma »

Hi guys,

We are going to try to define the doubt we have when the weekend finishes and we see the full backup for a VM has failed (Saturday) but the incremental backup for this failed VM has gone fine the next day (Sunday) under DataDomain (disk). How could we launch the full for the failed VM?:

- Saturday days is full for a backup job called Wintel_WP1_Full_S21h_Incr_D_V21h
- For Wintel_WP1_Full_S21h_Incr_D_V21h backup job you can see 3 VM: VM1, VM2 y VM3
- The backup job has 14 cycles.
- The first week, full and 6 incrementals are ok (we have 6 cycles for the 3 VM).
- The second week only fails the backup job for VM2 on Saturday (full).
- The next day, on Sunday, the incremental is ok for all VM.
- Then the cycles:
VM1: 14
VM2: 13
VM3:14

What happen in this environment? I think we cannot launch a full under another backup job for VM2, can we? With the cycles configured for backup job (14), if VM2 hasn't got a full, the cycles for this VM will be 20, won't be? How could avoid it?

Hi Irishma,
what backup method do you use, does synthetic or active full crash?
Could you provide the error message you get?
By the way, have you already contacted technical support team?
Thanks!

Thanks for your quick answer :)

The backups are incremental and Active full (synthetic full are not supported under datadomain environment).

It's not an error, it's a doubt how to avoid to lose the full cycle or recover it to avoid the chain for VM2 spends more than 14 cycles because if there is not a full, the incrementals don't expire.

Regards.

Could you please clarify what do you mean by this?

If VM misses full backup, it continues with incrementals until the next full. Retention will adjust the number of restore points eventually.
