Too Many Full Backups

Post by Maich »

Hi there,
I'm having some difficulty getting the settings right for our needs.
I've got a 9TB data archive I"m trying to backup with Veeam 12.
I've got a 32TB repository to store the backups but I keep running out of space.
I only need 2 Full backups at any given time but it's making 4.
I seem to not have a good understanding of the option here so if someone could explain it I would really appreciate it!

I have these settings:
Retention Policy 7 days
Keep certain full backups longer for archival purposes:
1 weekly, 1 monthly
Advanced - Create synthetic full backups periodically: Create on Sunday.

I thought this would give me 2 full backups while only needing the space to create a 3rd to replace 1 of the 2 (the weekly)

So space-wise it should only occupy 3x the archive(compressed) + the periodicals (which are almost nothing since this data is barely touched)

However it tries to make 4 full backups filling my NAS. Anyway I'm obviously missing something here, anyone care to enlighten me? :D

Hello Maich

May I ask what repository you have in use? I assume it's a NAS device?

You will see at least 3 full backups, that's correct.
Seeing 4 full backups may have something todo on how we apply the retention.
For the short term policy, we calculate the retention with "N+1 day". N is the amount of days you have configured in the retention settings. With 7 days, we keep every restore point for 8 days. With that logic and Forward Incremental chains with weekly full backups, we cannot remove the backup chain from week 3 until we have at least the new full backup in Week 5.

I suggest you open a support case and let our customer support team check the settings and available restore points.
Logs should help to confirm my assumption.

Best,
