Sorry, maybe a stupid question, but if we ant to upgrade our veeam backup system (under support of course), can we use the files from https://www.veeam.com/downloads.html to upgrade? (as that mentions "trial")

Yes you can. It is a trial until you put in the license file.

Yes, you can use it to update from a pre-version. If you are already on v12 GA or later, you must use the patch file to deploy the cumulative patch:
https://www.veeam.com/kb4420
You can also get the ISO from the kb article directly.
Without a license, it will be running as a community edition. It only runs in trial if you install the trial license.
