Upgrading OS Version of Linux Backup Proxy
Hello together,
since the new VBR V12 now supports Ubuntu 22.04 LTS I have a short question concerning the backup proxies. Currently I have several Backup Proxies with Ubuntu 20.04 LTS as VMs on our VMWare Hosts for Hot-Add Mode. This is working great, but I would like to upgrade them to 22.04 LTS. Is it possible to do a "release upgrade" of the OS (Ubuntu does give that option) or is it necessary to deploy new VMs an register them new in VBR because the upgrade would break some Veeam Component?
Thank you for your advice.
Best regards
Daniel

Re: Upgrading OS Version of Linux Backup Proxy
Hi Daniel
Upgrading OS of your Proxy will work. I have upgraded the proxy server in my lab to 22.04.
Backup and Recovery are still running successfully.
I suggest the following upgrade path:
1) Make sure that all backup and recovery sessions are stopped
2) Snapshot one of your proxy VM
3) Update the OS of this proxy VM
4) Test backup and replication processes for a few days.
If you don't see any issue with one proxy VM, go ahead and update the others.
Best,
Fabian

Re: Upgrading OS Version of Linux Backup Proxy
Hello Fabian,
thank you for your suggestions. I will follow your suggested path in the next few days and then monitor it for a week.
I'll post again, when this is all done.
Best regards
Daniel

Re: Upgrading OS Version of Linux Backup Proxy
Hello Fabian,
I just wanted to give a short feedback. The upgrade of the proxies to Ubuntu 22.04 LTS was successful and they are working fine. Only thing I had to do after the upgrade was to go into the VBR console and under "Managed Servers" go into the properties of the linux servers and click through the wizard. Otherwise I had a warning during host discovery concerning the status of NFS. Even though we don't use NFS we had the tools installed originally to get rid of the warning. After that the host discovery was successful.
Thanks again.
Best regards
Daniel

Re: Upgrading OS Version of Linux Backup Proxy
Hi Daniel
Thanks for your feedback.
I didn't had such warning in my lab. But my proxies are not using DirectNFS as a transport mode.
Best,
Fabian

Re: Upgrading OS Version of Linux Backup Proxy
Hi Fabian,
we don't use it either, the proxies are used for Hot-Add mode. But in the original installation of the proxies the nfs-common package was installed, after the host discovery in V11a showed a warning, that the status of NFS could not be checked. And since we didn't want any warning signs in the logs we installed that package and the warning was gone.
But like I wrote, it was not a big thing to click through that wizard for our few proxies and after that all is good.
Best regards
Daniel
