Use per-VM backup files check box and Deduplication

Post by baber » Oct 13, 2018 5:38 am

Dear all
Hi

in your veeam user guide document on page 238 mentioned :

with select the Use per-VM backup files check box Veeam Backup & Replication will write VM data to the backup repository in several streams, which will improve the backup job performance. However, in this case Veeam Backup & Replication will not deduplicate data between VMs added to the job. For more information, see Per-VM Backup Files.

now i want to know if i select this item (Use per-VM backup files check box) on repository veeam could not do duplicate for that vm backup ?

Hi,

Setting that checkbox will prevent deduplication between different VMs in the backup chain. Virtual disks belonging to the same VM will be still deduplicated.

Thanks

thanks
but what does your mean from between different vms in the backup chain. and virtual disks belong to same vm

because i just create one job with many vms for example my job consist of 5 vms (vm1......vm5)
is that your means deduplication will be accomplish for vm1's backup chains (full , incremental backups)
and will not deduplicate between vm1 and vm2 backups ?

but i confused why you say 2 kind of deduplication mode what is difference between deduplication in one backup chain and deduplication among VMS ? because finally deduplication is doing and will be dgrade size of vm backup

Is that correct ?

Deduplication for one chain does not get rid of the duplicates in other chains:

VM1 Chain: [AB] - [BC] - [ABC] - [AD] --> ABCD
VM2 Chain: [BB] - [A] - [BDD] --> ABD

Deduplication with a single chain:

[AB][BB] - [BC][A] - [ABC][BDD] --> ABCD

Thanks!
