Using Encryption at storage level, not Veeam level

Post by ttlan1002 »

Dear everyone

I have a question about backup encryption
Any trouble if we buy some dedup appliances like ExaGrid, DataDomain and enable the encryption at storage level not Veeam level? e.g: Self Encrypting Drive (SED). All data will be encrypted at storage and encrypted keys are managed by Storage. Does it work ?

In case we enable encryption at both of 2 layers Veeam Backup Job and Storage level , does it work?

Hello,
encryption at storage level (no matter which storage) is not relevant for any software layer (that includes backup software and Veeam) above. Storage level encryption is transparent to the layers above.

You can enable encryption also on Veeam job level. But that would reduce the deduplication factor massively. In other words: source side encryption makes a deduplication appliance it a useless investment.

So if you like your money, then you enable encryption only at repository level https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=100 or on the storage side. Never enable it on the job level.

Best regards,
Hannes
