v6 backup proxies on Windows Server 2008 R2 core

Does anyone have experience installing backup proxies on Windows Server 2008 R2 Core?

I have two ESXi hosts with local datastores and I'm thinking this might be a good way to preserve resources but also give me direct access to the datastores through vStorage APIs.
