VBR Version13

Post by OMW72 »

Hi all,
I heart that the version13 is shortly before the release. Is it true that the reverse incremental option is not longer availabe with the version13?
We as a company put a second data center into operation and have to migrate all current backupjobs to the new data center. A lot of them are reverse incremental. That the reason why this info is impoetant for us.
Thanks in advance
Oliver

Hi OMW72,

Yes, Reverse Incremental is being phased out as the use cases remaining for it are fairly limited and can be better achieved typically with other methods.

v13 is slated for this year, but you have a bit of time to start planning for the change.

What's the main use-case for reverse incremental for you?

Hello David,
Thanks for your quick action in this matter.
The current config guaranteed that we have a fullbackup on a tape for each backupjob at the end of the day. In addition we are in the process to increase the restore points to 30 day/points. This is our goal because of the restore time.
When reverse incremental is not longer aviallable its is difficult to configure the scenario with the vbk for each day and the restore points for 30 days. Of course this can be configure with the syntetic full and/or active fullbackup but you need to have a lot of storage. Because instead the reverse increment for each day you have a full backuck for each day depends on the restore days/points.

Oliver

Hi OMW72,

You're very welcome, and thanks for the explanation -- I figured it was about tape, and I think the easiest answer for this is to switch to Forever Forward Incremental. This will "unlock" the Virtual Full Feature for your backup to tape jobs -- Virtual Full creates a standalone Full backup directly on tape from incremental points -- you can configure the tape job to make a full on any combination of days of the week, meaning daily virtual fulls are perfectly normal.

Virtual full is best way of moving full backups to tape currently, and I think this would make your transition a lot easier. Give it a shot now with one or two of your jobs and you'll see how it works.

Hello David,
this is the feature what we´re looking for. We will setup a tape test job asap for testing. Thanks again for your great support.

Greetings,
Oliver

Would it possible in V13 to have Virtual full on tape (which is best way of moving full backups to tape) and to keep some active full on disk to avoid to have an old vbk and multiple increment ? (especially if we have a long chain with more than 30 days RP)
