vcenter server backup with veeam 7

Post by davegold » 1 person likes this post

Hi,

I was looking for details on the new Veeam 7 feature, "Transparent Backup of vCenter Server VM," that allows one to backup the vcenter server via the vcenter server. (Instead of going through a specific ESXi server).

Specifically, I'm wondering how this works.

Thanks,
Dave

Dave, yes, there's no more need in direct host connection during vCenter server backup as its databases are basically excluded from VSS processing. You can find some details here (some specifics regarding the configuration with remote database).

Hope this helps.

So in this case this Blog http://up2v.nl/2011/05/06/backup-of-vce ... plication/ is rather outdated since 2011 ?
I'm using Veeam Backup & Replication 8.0.0.917 so I wonder if I do need to pin down the VCenter VM to one ESXi host for a successful backup.

I've implemented this one already: http://www.veeam.com/kb1051

Ok, so I guess it is no longer relevant anymore for Veeam Backup & Replication 8.0 ?

It is not relevant for Veeam B&R v8.

8) Cool, so I no longer need to worry about the VCenter crashing itself during the Veeam backup session.

Yep, actually this was the case even with v7, when database exclusion functionality was first introduced.

Given a vSphere infrastructure based on ESXi 5.5 nodes where the vCenter is a Windows Server 2008 R2 VM and another Windows server 2008 R2 is the Veeam B&R 9.5 server, is there any issue using Veeam B&R to backup the vCenter VM?
Up to now we used a third party backup program to backup the vCenter to a NAS, but I don't see the need to go on using such program.
Am I missing any relevant issue?
Regards

You can backup vCenter using Veeam B&R, no issues here.
