Veaam secondary backup repository to Azure File Shares
Hi,
We are thinking to send our secondary backup copy to Azure File Shares. Is this possible and supported by Veeam? Does anybody doing this?
Thanks

Re: Veaam secondary backup repository to Azure File Shares
Azure file share can be used with nfs or cifs protocol. From protocol perspective, it‘s supported.
But I dont recommend it. There is a possibility of poor performance when you are synthesizing full backup files.
And there is no block cloning active. Zero space saving if you have multiple full backups.
Second, you will not have any ransomware protection from veeam site with object lock or a similar feature.
I recommend to take a look at the object storage integration (object Lock not available with Azure Blob Storage at the moment).
It‘s much better for space effiency, performance and stability.

Agree, I can't imagine a single reason for anyone to use Azure Files Shares over Azure Blob Storage. Azure Files provides a worse backup target from every perspective, and not a single benefit.

And is this true even for NAS secondary backup repository?
This is just a temporary workaround while waiting for Veeam to support cloud object storage as a secondary repository target.

Re: Veaam secondary backup repository to Azure File Shares
From performance and cost perspective, it is much better to create a proper backup repository out of an Azure VM instead.
