Veeam 12.1.2.172 Fails if you don't have VBR console installed
Per Veeam's hardening guide, we have removed the VBR console from the backup server itself. Previous upgrades went smooth. This one errored out at the end saying it could not update VBR console and to install it manually. It also said it could not update the Kasten plugin (I should have taken a screenshot)
I was starting to sweat but all the services came up, I logged into my jumpbox and started VBR console and it prompted me to upgrade it, which it did successfully. I was able to run some test workloads without any issue.
You may want to consider addressing this, the upgrade said failed at the very end and to reboot and try again. That will too fail since VBR console is not on the server. Why recommend removing it in your hardening guide when it causes potential upgrade issues ?
Should I open a SR? Where would the upgrade logs be stored on the backup server?

Please note that the hardening guide is not an official documentation but an unofficial community project. As such R&D does not verify these recommendations in our QA labs when testing new releases or upgrades. We do however verify hardening recommendations issued by the built-in Security & Compliance Analyzer wizard. Thank you!

Hi Gostev,
While I see the reasoning of your reaction, the hardening guide is on a Veeam url: https://bp.veeam.com/security/Design-an ... ction.html
I couldn't find any footnote that this is community and not officially supported so I can understand the OP in this case.

@Egor Yakovlev could you please trace who is behind this project and ask to add the corresponding footnote?

Re: Veeam 12.1.2.172 Fails if you don't have VBR console installed
I'll add that I also thought that was official Veeam documentation. Is the entire bp.veeam.com/security documentation community maintained? The copyright note at the bottom would seem to indicate it was written by Veeam, if it's written and maintained by the community it shouldn't have a copyright attribution for Veeam. Also, it definitely does not say anywhere on there that it's not official Veeam documentation, so since Veeam hosts it at veeam.com I do believe it's a logical assumption that it is official documentation. It's definitely something that should be clarified, if companies are going to implement a "community maintained" configuration and not an official "Veeam maintained" configuration, we need to know so that we know not to expect support. Right now I would fully expect Veeam support to support those guidelines.

Re: Veeam 12.1.2.172 Fails if you don't have VBR console installed
@Gostev : Thank you for the reply and extra info. No where did it say this was not official documentation. What is the recommendation here? Should I mount the ISO and install the console back to the VBR server? I don't want to be in a situation that is not officially supported or causing update issues.Gostev wrote: ↑May 30, 2024 12:55 pm Please note that the hardening guide is not an official documentation but an unofficial community project. EDIT: Now the option to install the console is grayed out. It says "Please uninstall existing Veeam components first"
Not sure how to proceed to get this compliant.

Uninstalling should be the easiest and fastest indeed. Then you just reinstall pointing the setup into the same configuration database. Feel free to contact our Customer Support for assistance, should it be required. Thanks

I had the same issue. If you download the full ISO for this new release version, you can install the backup shell package (MSI) manually. Then re-run the upgrade again and it will complete successfully.

FWIW, "bp" (Best Practices) is a product of https://www.veeambp.com/mjr.epicfail wrote: ↑May 30, 2024 1:51 pm Hi Gostev,

This is correct, but all the guides are hosted on bp.veeam.com, which could give anyone the suggestion its official veeam guide.FWIW, "bp" (Best Practices) is a product of https://www.veeambp.com/
On both pages there is no disclaimer that this are mere suggestions and not fully supported by Veeam Product team.

Hi Gostev . I was able to uninstall VBR and re-install it with no issues at all. VBR console and explorers are back on the backup server and performance seems to be even better this time.
