Veeam B+R console on different system

Hi all,

when starting Veeam B+R console it is possible to connect the console to any remote system. With the default B+R Installation, console and backend are installed on the same server.

Is it possible to install only the console locally on a workstation? This would be very nice, because currently all admins are connecting via RDP to the Veeam Server and are starting the console directly on the server.

When using the Veeam B+R console on a different system, restoring guest files to a VM is extremely slow. The Backup Browser (mounting of restore point) and the restore process itself take very much longer as if logged in directly to the Veeam server.

Can this be improved?

The backup server itself is the configured mount Server.

Have you tried to assigned the role of mount server to any machine located in remote location to keep traffic from crossing WAN? Thanks.

I don't quite understand what you mean. Mount server, backup server and client with B+R console are all in the same Network, there is no WAN concerned.

You said originally "remote location", therefore, I assumed there is a WAN connection between local backup console and remote backup server.

So, both are located within the same physical location?

Yes, both are located within the same physical location. When connected via RDP to the server, B&R is working fast. When starting B&R console on a different computer and connecting with it to the backup server, it is very slow (Gigabit network).

Where the repository server itself is located and what type or restore were you using (restore to original or copy to)? Basically, you shouldn't see big difference in restore performance, probably contacting support to review your setup would be a good step.

Repository server = mount server = Veeam Server, located in the same physical location and the same network as the client running Veeam console.

We were using "Restore to/Overwrite", but actually the mounting takes a lot of time.

I just tested it: Mounting a restore point of a backup chain containing 1 full/5 increments took about 150 seconds when logged in (RDP) to the Veeam server. When running the Veeam console on the client it took about 185 seconds. So it's not that dramatic as I expected. We had that feeling that it took a lot longer before.

The actual restore operation (one file 5,7GB) took approx. 220 seconds on both systems.

That's expected, since initial mount (with the purpose of browsing files) is performed on the server initiated the restore, while actual restore to original location always uses mount to the backup server (or mount server, if it is configured on different server).
