Veeam B&R - email notifications (again sorry could not find a suitable post)

Hello,

Can someone confirm if this is default behaviour:

When you are in Options for global email notification settings and you send a test email but you have not yet made email notification settings in at least one job the test fails with 'wrong credentials...'

This lead to some confusion and/or testing with powershell / diagpro etc. and the emails were sent from these two.

Settings were:

Port 25
smtp-server: some relay...(hornetsecurity server) -> no M365 and no Google (modern authentication)
no ssl
no credentials

Since I believe it makes sense, just the 'error message' might be a bit misleading.

HI Annette, welcome to the forums

As long as there valid information in the General Email Notifications, the test email is expected to send without any errors. There is not a need to configure the job email notifications, those are additional optional email configuration options to allow more granular email notification control on a per job basis.

If you're persistently getting the error when sending the test email and the normal email notifications are not sending, it's best to open a case with Support and let Support review.

But as to your question, the job email notification settings are optional, and as long as the global notification email settings are configured correctly, the test email and the daily global emails will send.

Hi David,
Thank you very much.
Then I know I have to further investigate why this was happening.

Had been upgrading to Veeam 13 on the 14 or 15th December 2025 - and also ran the patch which was released 6th January 2026 (apologies - should have mentioned build number in the initial post).

I just noticed this week that at some point notifications stopped working.
So then startet to test since I thought it had to do with the smpt server. But as powershell and smtp diag were sending emails fine I was double checking within veeam and all of a sudden it worked.
I know I would have to break it down into the smaller reproducible chunks but have no time or better I am not allowed to 'waste' so much time. But thanks again this answer helps already to know how it should work.
