Veeam B&R Feature Request: Evaluate before backing up

Post by Hariseldon1 »

When someone wants to evaluate "how much will I benefit from running NTFS data deduplication" they do not need to enble the feature in windows server, they merely need to download and run the microsoft tool "DeDupEval.exe"
(https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/previ ... 0(v=ws.11))

I wish Veeam B&R had a capability to perform the proceedure to evaluate the size of the backup without actually having to write the backup job to an output file.

Am I the only one who would find this a useful feature?

Is it possible to implement please?

Hi Hari

Thank you for your request. The backup server does not know before the source data blocks were processed by the proxy how big a backup file will get. Such calculation you requested would mean, that we need to read all VMs from the production storage and analyze the data to determine how big a backup file will get. It's easy todo on a single disk (such as MS does), but when it comes to dozens or even hundreds of VMs, it will take too much time. Let's see how popular the request gets.

For now, you could use Veeam One Reports (which is our monitoring tool for backup and virtualization) together with our calculator to create an estimation on how much backup storage you will need. There is an evaluation license for Veeam One.
